A Place to Call Home
The Need
Too often,
families affected by mental illness lack the resources and information
necessary to obtain essential professional guidance and support.
In response to increased demands for quality mental health services,
Hopewell Center has embarked on an effort aimed at constructing a modern
residence for mentally ill adults making the transition and recovery to
independent living. Hopewell Center's effort will make a world of
difference in the live of those who suffer from mental illnesses.
The care, nurturing and training that patients will receive at the new
facility will help them become productive, independent and
self-sufficient.
The Project
Known as A
Place to Call Home, the proposed facility will provide affordable,
supervised, semi-independent and flexible support housing for mentally
ill adults in a family-like environment. This facility will be
located at the Northwest corner of Taylor Street and Washington
Boulevard in th City of St. Louis.
A Place to
Call Home, will offer housing for a minimum of 15 residents with the
unique design feature of combining congregate living with
semi-independent apartment units. The facility will have five
1-bedroom units, one 2-bedroom unit and a congregate space which will
house 8 residents. The facility will also house a 2-bed crisis
unit, designed to offer stabilization over a 24-72 hour period.
A PLACE TO CALL HOME WILL PROVIDE:
-
Affordable,
low-income housing for a minimum of 15 homeless and mentally ill
persons and their families.
-
A flexible,
specialized and supervised living alternative for the mentally ill.
-
Mental
health and rehabilitation services to a high risk, seriously mental
ill population, leading to greater independence and productive
lives.
-
An
alternative to hospitalization and emergency-room services.
-
An
opportunity to work cooperatively with other community agencies,
including hospitals, schools, vocational facilities, rehabilitation
centers, businesses, and government agencies.
-
An
attractive, well maintained facility to the surrounding community.
-
Employment
for 12 to 15 individuals: case-managers, house monitors,
psychologists, physicians, support staff and nurses.
Your support
will serve as an indication to the St. Louis metropolitan community that
inadequate housing for the mentally ill is a serious problem that needs
to be addressed by the entire community, so that persons with mental
disabilities will be able to make the transition and recovery to
independent living and become contributing and productive members of our
community. Without the project and your support, a vital societal
problem will remain unaddressed.
