FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - News and Calendar Event

(St. Louis , MO - June 14, 2010) In response to the lack of health and wellness resources in North St. Louis, Betty Jean Kerr People's Health Centers (PHC) and Amanda Luckett Murphy Hopewell Center (Hopewell) have collaborated to provide medical and behavioral services this summer at no cost to the community. PHC and Hopewell will drive a mobile health unit into North St. Louis and begin a Healthy Living Series program to provide free medical and behavioral health services to create a "You can't get to us, we'll come to you" effect. The series of events will begin on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at New North Side Conference Center at 5939 Goodfellow Blvd., from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, and run through August 14, 2010. A schedule of upcoming Saturday Mobile Clinics will be announced to the public at each health fair, as well as the location of the participating church or community organization.

The first event will be held on Saturday, June 26th and will focus on Men's Health, however, everyone is welcome. The event will provide free health screenings (initial dental exams, blood pressure, glucose, depression and anxiety screenings), opportunity to talk to a doctor or health professional, panel discussion, cooking demonstration, free haircuts, food, fun, prizes, and slide dancing. A drawing will be held to win a car wash and tool kit.

The People's/Hopewell North St. Louis Healthy Living Series Program is an important early step in addressing the need for health and wellness resources in the community. There will ultimately be three phases to this initiative:

Phase 1. Implementation of the Healthy Living Summer Health Fair Series in collaboration with New Northside Community Center.

  • June 26th: Men's Health
  • July 24th: Women's Health
  • August 14th: Youth & Children's Health

Each health fair will give a full spectrum of health screenings, as well as interactive informational sessions. The PHC/Hopewell health van will be on-site at each location to provide health and mental screenings. There will also be various speakers and vendors on-site to help educate participants on everyday health issues, as well as fun activities and prizes for adults and children. Each event will include chances to win different prizes, such as car wash/tool kits; day spa certificates; and a girl and boy's bicycle.

Phase 2. Implementation of the "Healthy Living Series" Saturday Mobile Clinics in collaboration with churches and other organizations throughout North St. Louis City.

In partnership with New Northside, PHC and Hopewell will engage with other area churches and community organizations to host health screenings, education, and immunization clinic utilizing the mobile medical unit prepared for this purpose.

Phase 3. Establishment of a permanent home in a North St. Louis City location.

Each phase of the program is designed to build on the preceding phase and foster collaboration and support throughout the community for the benefit of overall community health and well-being.

Due to growing concerns, the North St. Louis Health Care Access Study Task Force was formed amidst tremendous support from the St. Louis African American Aldermanic Caucus. According to the report developed by Research and Evaluation Solutions, Inc. (REESSI) on behalf of the North St. Louis Health Care Access Study Task Force, life expectancy for males living in North St. Louis is approximately 10 years lower than the average life expectancy for St. Louis City.

This report also identified eight specific issues related to health care in North St. Louis. Among the critical issues requiring attention and resolution are, 1) a low number of private health providers, including dentists available in North St. Louis, and 2) mental health services greatly needed in North St. Louis. The St. Louis Aldermanic Caucus will lend resounding support to the People's family of corporations' outreach strategy. It is proposed that a mix of new and upgraded facilities offering a range of quality health services, such as primary, specialty, urgent-care, dental, preventive and mental health is developed.
